Reposted from July 2009: Drug-free Solutions for PCOS

Prescription medicine has become a stronghold on our society. For every illness or disease, we Americans take an over-the-counter or prescription drug. According to Jessica Fraser of NaturalNews.com, “The problem is, prescription drugs don’t treat diseases; they merely cover the symptoms.” (1)
I used to work at a holistic retreat center that educated its guests on how to naturally relieve aches, pains, diseases and illness through an organic, wholesome diet, regular exercise, and various therapies (for the body and mind). By exhibiting proven results through studies done on men and women (including themselves) partaking in the diet, exercise, and therapy regime (on a long-term basis), they revealed the miraculous effect their recommended teachings could have on just about anyone.
The sad part? Before the guests could leave the retreat center – most stayed an average of three weeks – they would have to learn how to apply their new skills in the “real world”. The doctor instructed the guests to respond to others criticisms with “My doctor told me to.” What I didn’t understand at the time is that when others display cynicism and negativity toward someone who is making positive changes, it makes the transition harder; telling someone that the new changes are doctor prescribed shuts up even the most skeptical onlooker.
The point is that our society has put doctors, mainly MD’s, on a pedestal, making their judgments and opinions the final answer. Not to say that doctors aren’t wonderful, brave and necessary people, but they aren’t perfect and their knowledge can be limited.
We live in an age where any ache or pain is relieved immediately with pills and serums. We never stop to question what might be causing the ache, or to what root cause the pain might be connected.
Treating the symptoms and not the core issue is problematic because time is being wasted by forcing the body to process unnatural chemicals and treatments and should be spent restoring the condition of the body.
As a personal testimony, I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), a disorder I have suffered from for over ten years. After months of tests, blood work, and physical exams, PCOS was the final diagnosis. If you don’t know all of the lovely side effects that come with this disorder, here are just a few; infertility, obesity, and insulin resistance.
The remedy (and I mean the ONLY remedy in the world of traditional medicine)? Birth Control. Forever.
I was told by several doctors that I will have to be on birth control pills until I hit menopause. My slim chance at ever having children can possibly be counteracted by taking a few different medications. My doctor also prescribed Metformin to ease the symptoms of insulin resistance; if you are not aware, Metformin is predominantly prescribed to diabetics.
To this day, I have controlled insulin levels, regulated hormones, and my weight is in a normal range. What am I taking? Not Birth Control. I religiously take organic supplements (a specific combination to control my insulin) through a company called Insulite Labs. I also consistently exercise, and I have a balanced, healthy diet consisting of whole foods. I do not take any kind of prescription medication, nor do I “pop a pill” for any aches or pains. I stick to the natural stuff for any discomforts I may have.
To anyone who may be suffering from one or many different problems, I beseech you to get to the root of the problem. Once you’ve talked to your doctor and done any of their required procedures, search for information on your own. It may be hormonal, emotional, genetic, or physiological, but when you discover what is causing it, you will uncover a world of natural ways to combat it.
If and when you find that maybe it’s a diet change or organic supplements that ultimately work for you, and someone thinks you’re crazy for it, here’s what you tell them: repeat after me, “My doctor told me to.”
