Women with PCOS usually deal with so many negative symptoms, such as weight gain, acne, facial and body hair, infertility and more. These “side effects” of our condition can be frustrating to deal with and can sometimes create feelings of anger, depression and hopelessness.
“Why is this happening to me?” is a question I’m often asked from women with PCOS. The truth is that I can’t tell you why some things happen in our lives, though I feel it’s besides the point.
“Why” something is happening to you is not as important as “what” you will do about it. We live in an imperfect world with many problems, and it’s up to US to decide how we will react.
Many women with PCOS (me included) react to their diagnosis or their many years of pain in dealing with the condition and its negative impact on life, with a “pessimistic” or “victim” mentality. Because of this, many of us have the “identity” that says, “I’m a sick woman with a serious condition, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
This is the identity I first clung to when I learned I had this condition. However, not too long after, I got REALLY tired of feeling bad all the time – I was plagued with feelings of hopelessness and self-pity. I had a “victim” mentality, and this was seriously holding me back from enjoying my life and pursuing the activities, relationships and dreams I desired.
Here’s the kicker: Being a “victim” is an identity you choose for yourself. It’s a choice! This is good news, though, because if we can choose to feel bad and feel sorry for ourselves, then we can choose the opposite – feelings of gratitude and appreciation.
You can choose – right here and right now – the identity you want with your health. When I created a new identity (note: I had experienced few positive results at this point), it was one of “Health, Wholeness, Abundance!” and it made all the difference in the world. I started noticing great things about my life, in spite of my condition. I also took opportunities I thought would help my condition – opportunities I would have never noticed or taken advantage of when I had a “victim” identity.
Your life can change dramatically when you choose to create a new identity. To do this, you MUST learn (this means practice – it may not feel natural to do this at first) to speak, think and feel your new identity. You will also want to be specific about the new identity you want for yourself.
I hope you take this time to create a new identity for yourself and experience what life can be like as the new you!
Tip Challenge:
1. What “identity” will you create for yourself – here and now?
2. How will you speak differently about your health and life in general? Think? Feel?
3. How do you feel this will influence your life?
